# Generic thinness in finitely generated subgroups of SL_n(Z)

Elena Fuchs and Igor Rivin. IMRN 2017(17), 5385–5414; DOI 10.1093/imrn/rnw136. Online publication 5 August 2016.

The paper asks whether two independently sampled integral determinant-one matrices generate a thin group. Its principal sampling family bounds both the matrix operator norm and its inverse. Ordinary norm balls, symmetrized balls and random walks define different probability models. Separate conclusions concern generic freeness, Zariski density, Hausdorff dimension in dimension two and Lyapunov exponents.

The proposed argument combines Cartan-coordinate volume estimates, lattice-point counting in sectors, exterior-power contraction and ping-pong. Read Section 1 for the sampling model, Section 2 for the two-dimensional case, Sections 3–4 together for the higher-dimensional argument and counting hypotheses, and Section 5 for the separate Lyapunov statement.

The primary model source is arXiv 1506.01735v1, dated 4 June 2015 (28 pages). The author-hosted genericsln4.pdf is separately frozen; it is not asserted identical in all content. The journal publication has 30 pages and revised Section 2, including a new trace-counting lemma absent from arXiv v1. Direct journal HTML/PDF acquisition attempts failed; cached search-indexed publisher passages provide limited version comparisons only. This native-source campaign does not claim complete coverage of revised journal-only content.

External proof inputs must have been available by the journal received date, 28 July 2015. Later papers are retrospective context. The map indexes 23 mathematical environments and 25 references. Twenty theorem/lemma/proposition/fact units plus twelve prose packets cover the mathematical source body. Source-reference edges are candidate relations, not proof certificates; external proofs and source chronology remain separate checks. Native TeX was decoded according to source-encoding.json, comments masked with positions retained, and the exact packaged bibliography expanded. Original source bytes remain available. Fact 5.3 is included without changing its source statement. Figure pixels are not supplied to the native-text panel.
