The question, prior methods and provenance
This contextual assessment is separate from the neutral reading packet and the independent referee responses. It was not supplied to the panel.
Was the complexity question already asked?
Yes. Alman and Rao's 2023 paper explicitly treats the unrestricted arithmetic-operation question as open and surveys barriers that require coefficient, graph or conditioning restrictions. Its own result improves the leading constant for power-of-two DFTs. The present manuscript claims an asymptotic logarithmic power saving for all lengths in its declared exact-arithmetic model. Comparing these requires retaining their different operation counts and preparation conventions. Alman–Rao, Introduction and Section 1.4.
The September 25 manuscript's introduction cites Morgenstern's bounded-coefficient lower bound, Ailon's 2013 unitary-gate result and his 2014 well-conditioned model, and Alman–Rao. Thus the paper does discuss the main distinction raised by Ben Recht's October 12 essay. Its statement explicitly permits unrestricted coefficients and exact intermediate values, supplies a canonical root of polynomial order, and disclaims stability, bit-complexity and a useful crossover estimate.
Recht also links Ailon's Tighter Fourier Transform Complexity Tradeoffs. That specific work, arXiv:1404.1741, is absent from the frozen bibliography. The cited 2014 well-conditioned paper is related but is not that reference. The tighter tradeoffs concern an in-place model and conditioning bottlenecks; they are not, by themselves, an unrestricted impossibility theorem for the declared algorithm. Ailon, tighter tradeoffs, Ailon, well-conditioned model.
This establishes that an unrestricted asymptotic FFT complexity question predates the model-generated manuscript. It does not establish that the supplied proof solves it: correctness is assessed separately in the panel and source-audit views. Lack of practical speedup does not resolve that mathematical question.
What line of attack does the manuscript use?
| Component | Documented antecedent | What the manuscript supplies |
|---|---|---|
| Coprime factorization | Good's tensor factorization | Charged CRT permutations and traversal |
| Arbitrary-length reduction | Bluestein; Rabiner–Schafer–Rader | Explicit padding, chirps, all three transforms and master-root accounting |
| Fast local convolution | Standard binary FFT | Bounded-fan-out linear DAGs used by the compiler |
| Borrowed storage | Bennett reversible simulation; catalytic-space work | A second source-suppressed replay cancelling arbitrary initial contents |
| Exact-width Toeplitz compilation | Kailath–Kung–Morf displacement ranks; companion exact-Fourier paper | Rank-three rectangular chunks and a measured workspace rule |
| Finite tensor saving | OpenAI's integer-multiplication phase-network companion | A reproduced network, arbitrary-role interface, exact batching recurrence and explicit Δ |
| Symbolic uniformization, Appendix A | Noether normalization and Nakayama; finite-tensor companion | Local certificate, rational-algebra extraction, explicit printer and a bounded-printer proof |
The approach combines established transformations and storage ideas with the manuscript's finite network and its quantitative compilation/accounting chain. The source record supports that mathematical lineage. It does not support a claim that all components are independently novel, or that combining standard ingredients makes the result routine. A literature-priority audit would be additional work.
What do we know about the generating model's discovery process?
The checked repository contains selected reasoning summaries for other problem families, but no located family-130 discovery transcript or exact generating prompt. Citations and similarity document antecedents of the argument, not what the model actually retrieved, tried or rejected. We cannot infer that it followed a preselected human approach, performed an unusually long search, or independently rediscovered every ingredient. OpenAI mathematics repository.
Companion scope
This archive review covers the 31-page quantitative main manuscript. The 49-page Finite tensor savings and exact Fourier circuits companion is a separately cited artifact and has not received a full review here. The integer-multiplication companion's later precision and tape arguments are also outside this campaign. Their references remain visible in the complete dependency inventory; locally reproduced formulas can be checked within the main manuscript.
See the neutral argument map for every bibliography entry and its source role, and the panel/source-audit views for mathematical findings. No target Lean build or axiom audit was performed for this paper.
